Led by master theater designer and architecture consultant, Jean Guy Lecat, whom Peter Brook refers to as "Monsieur Space," this workshop explores the dynamics of theater space and performance in the context of the audience-performer relationship, the essential simplicity of design, and the collaborative ethos. LEARN TO STRING YOUR PERFORMERS ALONG.
Yvette Edery will be teaching a puppetry workshop in Ireland, worth 8 credits, open to enrolled students from any university. Prerequisite: two semesters of primary studio experience/equivalent. Students in this course will train in puppet manipulation, acting with puppets, voicing multiple characters, and staging puppetry as well as studying puppet culture and the world history of puppetry. Ireland serves as the perfect stage for puppetry due to the fantasy element of the culture (fairies, leprechauns, demons, ghosts), and students will be expected to imbibe that element inside and outside of class in order to build their imaginations for the limitlessness of puppetry (children flying, old people running, arms coming off, animals speaking). Taught by internationally recognized puppeteers, this intensive will give students the close attention, rigorous training, and impressive landscape to imbue their experience of imagination building and object sensitivity with puppetry, guiding them to the heart of universe creation. Many styles of puppetry will be covered and a final performance open to the public will give students the opportunity to see the results of their training. Students will be expected to keep a journal and self assess their growth as puppeteers in three main areas. Puppetry and performance storytelling will train the student in the making and expression of meaning through the language of motion. Students will be expected to train very vigorously in the exercises which open the performer's body to the puppet, to study very intensely the philosophies which open a puppeteer's mind to spontaneous and imaginative performance, and to use Ireland as the canvas whereupon they can come to be one with their environment and thus one with the nature of the form. GET WRITE TO BUSINESS AND TALK SHOP.
Announcing a new resource: an affordable writing workshop. Jennifer DeMeritt is a writer and performer who recently made a giant life change: quitting her full-time corporate job, going freelance, and committing 110 percent to writing. Her personal essays have been published in nerve.com, Glamour, BUST Magazine and more, and she's performed at NYC’s major spoken-word venues, from KGB to the Gotham Comedy Club. In addition to being an accomplished writer herself, she's got a knack for helping others with their writing. Two years ago she founded a mini-workshop, whose members’ accomplishments include publication in the New York Times, book deals with major publishers (one with a movie option), performances on National Public Radio, and fellowships at prestigious writing conferences. This fall, she's launching a new writing workshop, open to storytellers, monologists, essayists, and fiction writers. The workshop will meet every Tuesday at 7:30 in the East Village. Participants set their own agenda and choose which projects they want to work on. Through discussion and revision, she'll help participants identify the central challenges of each piece and refine the techniques to achieve their artistic vision. The workshop could be helpful for: an actor writing a one-person show; a comedian who wants to branch into storytelling or essay writing; a novelist who needs regular feedback to stay on course; anyone who needs support for a writing project. The workshop is $250 for 10 weeks. If you shop around, you'll find that this is an excellent deal. They are happy to arrange payment plans for artists who are long on commitment but short on cash. Testimonials are available. Please e-mail if you're interested (fenniferjest@hotmail.com), or call at 917/843-6835.

NEED AN ACTING CLASS THAT WILL PROPEL YOUR CAREER FORWARD?
New agent-taught series of classes, with $20 off for TRU readers! As an actor, are you frustrated by: Not being able to secure the audition appointments you know should be yours, not getting callbacks when you go to an audition, not feeling truly comfortable with your audition technique, not feeling truly comfortable with "cold reading" auditions, not finding monologues that suit you and your talents well, not finding monologues that are not already "done to death" by other actors, not finding a teacher who is well-versed in ways of helping you to achieve your career goals, not working with a teacher armed with a wealth of information, knowledge and experiences, willing to reinforce his thoughts and ideas with a veritable trove of anecdotal material, much of it gleaned from his own life and the lives of friends and colleagues? Then you are in luck! Lewis R. Chambers (who founded The Bethel Agency nearly 38 years ago and who has represented actors in all major media) plans a series of 3 or 4 classes during the months ahead. JOHN CHATTERTON DARES TO OFFER SOME GREAT DEALS.
A study by the New York Innovative Theater Foundation has found that 25% of Off-Off-Broadway theaters have closed in the last five years. Here's what John Chatterton has to say about that: "Maybe we need to rethink things, so consider the Studio Theatre at Where Eagles Dare. If you don't confuse it with a fully equipped performance space, it can be the perfect place to do a staged reading or to workshop a play that doesn't require much tech:
• Waiting room.
• Green room/dressing room (separate stage entrance).
• 50 seats, mostly on risers.
• $190 per night w/ dressing room, on off nights; $240 on Saturday and Sunday. (Currently $50 off on any night!)
• $800 for 4 nights w/ dressing room, Thursday through Sunday. (Currently $660!)
• 8 theater lights and 8 dimmers.
• Sound system.
• $240 on Saturday and Sunday. (Currently $50 off on any night!)
So, is Off-Off-Broadway going the way of the dinosaur, or is it adapting to change? Only time will tell. I believe that the urge to create will always find an outlet, however humble, and that those willing to adapt will always find a way to practice their art." Interested parties should call 212/279-2504 or email studios@oobr.com. For more details on Where Eagles Dare studios and theater, see www.johncpresents.com.

SWEAT DEAL AT THE PRODUCERS CLUB!
The Producers Club "sweat equity" deal for night management personnel to house manage and lock up the theater in the evenings during the week and on the weekends. They have a program called Sweat Equity (similar to programs at other Off-Off-Broadway theater spaces) where a particular company can work volunteer hours at the Producers Club in return for $10 an hour in rehearsal/performance space. Many newer companies have taken advantage of this opportunity in the past as it is a good way to offset production costs as well as become familiar with the growing artistic community at the Producers Club. BE PART OF AN EXCITING REVIVAL ON THE EAST SIDE!
Remember the Blue Heron Arts Center on East 23rd? That great theater/studio space has now been revived and reopened thanks to
Algonquin Theater Productions. They are currently seeking renters for its two performance spaces, two rehearsal spaces and offices. Algonquin Theater Productions has taken over the lease of the former Blue Heron Theater at 123 East 24th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues. Currently under way are plans to completely remodel the interior lobby so as to better replicate the feel of the era of the original Algonquin Round Table, when such playwrights and wits such as George S. Kaufman, Edna Ferber, Marc Connelly and Robert Benchley thrived. The theater complex features two working venues: The Kaufman Theater, a beautiful 99-seat house with state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment; The Parker Theater, an intimate 40-seat house, ideal for readings, one-acts and small casts. Both theaters are air conditioned. Also in the complex are two 16' by 24' rehearsal spaces, available from 8am to 11pm daily, and offices, which would be ideal for small theater companies needing a midtown point of operations. All facilities are available immediately. For information on long or short-term rentals, contact either Administrative Director Debra Grimberg at Debragrim@aol.com, or Artistic Director Tony Sportiello at AlgonquinProd@aol.com.

BLEECKER, BUT NOT BLEAK: SEEKING INVESTMENT PARTNERS.
The theatres at 45 Bleecker Street are a multiuse, hybrid theater complex. Former home of the Culture Project, it is the theater complex of the future. Most single theaters and theater complexes in New York City are built on a business model of four hours of use a day, six days a week. This theater complex is built on the business models of Las Vegas casinos where income is based on maximum use of space, revenue per square foot, per minute of the day, seven days a week. We will be open eighteen hours a day, seven days a week. With over 10,000 square feet and three large spaces, a 300-seat theatre, a 150-seat theatre, and a Lobby/Cafe, we have created multiple revenue streams. We will also internally produce shows including The Green Room, which will run seven nights a week starting at 1030PM in the 150-seat theatre. This complex will become the centerpiece, the jewel of downtown Off-Broadway theatre in New York City and a vital, sought-after theater complex that will set the artistic and financial standards for Off-Broadway nationally. CROWN HEIGHTS JEWEL IN ARTISTS’ CO-OP.
A great spot in Crown Heights Brooklyn, at Saint Marks Avenue. Between Nostrand and New York Avenue, at the corner of New York Avenue to be exact. It's a two-bedroom apartment. The room that is available is the master bedroom with its own private 1/2 bathroom, a closet large enough to fit a dresser and still be able to walk into it. The apartment is newly renovated, so all-new stainless steel appliances, tall ceilings and hardwood floors. The bedroom is not furnished; however, the rest of the apartment is. A bit about Carmen, the roommate: A 39-year-old fashion designer, illustrator and author. Works in the garment district at an accessories showroom, a 9-to-6 pm Monday to Friday job. Loves to cook, good music, yoga (no shoes in the apartment), dance, indie films, martial arts, fine and performing arts. Believes in keeping things clean. Does sometimes work from home on fashion design projects, but it's not on a regular basis. No smokers, no drugs, no pets. Rent: $900 (to move in, one month plus first month's rent). Utilities run $75 to $80 per month. Optimum Internet $30 per month. No cable for TV, but if you want you can have it installed under the current Optimum plan. Security in the lobby from 4 pm until 7 am, seven days a week. There's a laundry room in the building. It's an artist co-op building so the lobby is colorful and there are lots of artist professionals in the building as well as an integrated community. There's a grocery store on the corner and lots of free-standing produce and fish markets within walking distance. Near Eastern Parkway, The Brooklyn Museum, The Botanical Gardens, The Brooklyn Library and Prospect Park. You can take the 2/3 trains or the A/C trains. The apartment is available 6/15; if you need to move in sooner the current roommate is flexible. Please call Carmen at 347/645-1676.
