is a playwright, librettist, conceiver, director, producer and educator in New York and Sydney. Stephen co-conceived the Broadway smash, Smokey Joe’s Café, Broadway’s longest running musical revue in history. He was assistant director on West Side Story, Song and Dance, Baby and, Jerome Robbins tapped Stephen to direct a Fiddler on the Roof revival which was Tony nominated. His play, A Sign of the Times, was presented at Ars Nova Off-Broadway. Directing Fiddler at the Sydney Opera House led to his directing and staging there Follies in Concert with the Sydney Symphony, Cafe Rebetika!, Love Letters, You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow (Sondheim), and Simply Weill - A Kurt Weill Cabaret. Stephen produced and directed Syncopation by Allan Knee which holds the record as the most successful production of a new play in Australian history touring some 44 theaters. Stephen is also noted for his transformative work with Aboriginal artists. Stephen’s collaboration with multi-Grammy winner Bobby Rush, Slippin’ Through the Cracks, premiers in October at New Stage Theatre. His H Is for Happiness with the award-winning Sara Storer will workshop 2027. His new opera, the Common Good, based on 14th Century frescos The Allegory and Effect of Good and Bad Government, by the great Sienese artist Ambroglio Lorenzetti is in development. Stephen has been writer-in-residence in Spoleto Italy at the Mahler&LeWitt Studios and the LaMama Playwrighting Symposium, with fellowships at Yaddo, Bogliasco Foundation and Ragdale. A graduate of Yale, Steve is a member of SDC and The Dramatists Guild.
