Moving Musicals from Stage to Screen (and Vice Versa)

In the room: David Armstrong, host, writer and producer of Broadway Nation podcast, artistic director emeritus of The 5th Avenue Theatre. A look at the history of movie musicals, the ones we love and the ones we have never forgiven. What's gained and what's lost in moving from stage to screen?  Musicals made for film and not based on a stage show are almost never trying to do what Broadway musicals are trying to do. What are the basic differences between the two mediums and why do some things need to be adjusted – for better or worse – for a film?
