Originally conceived in 1959 by Tyrone Guthrie to break away from the restrictions of commercial theater, The Guthrie Theater opened in 1963 and helped pave the way for the development of today's  regional theaters throughout America, as well as supporting the growth of a healthy theater community in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area. In what ways is it still faithful to the legacy of Guthrie, and how has it grown and evolved over six decades? Now run with a huge staff and a complex infra-structure, what is the company hierarchy and division of labor? How does it serve the community and maintain and grow its subscriber base? What precipitated the need for a new theater building in 2006? How did the company respond to shutdown, and have things returned to normal yet?
