In the room: John Lant, TRU Board Member and 17-time off-Broadway lead producer/director & showrunner specializes in consulting and the development of plays and musicals in NYC and LA. A 40+ year veteran of theater, film/TV, involved in over 700 television, film, theater & touring shows, he is a multi-award-winning designer who served as production manager at Carnegie Hall for 14 seasons, Tilles Center and multiple venues off-Broadway. Mr. Lant is producing artistic director for Write Act Rep and has multiple awards from Dramalogue, the NAACP, and also California State Legislature Service Award for Community Outreach and Service to the Arts in 2000, 01, 08 & 09 to his credit. He had 5 shows running in NYC and LA when Covid shut down the theater world. John will discuss the in's and out's of what you want, thought you knew but what you NEED TO KNOW to run a production. A general overview of what development producer's will be looking for and what questions you can be expected to answer if you are planning on self-producing or working with a producing development team. Included will be agreements, budgets, union talent, how do you find the right location and type of theater you are looking for, deposits, insurance, venue contracts, union vs non-union talent, how do you dind your designers, cast, crew, management team, advantages if minimal technical elements, devising a strategy for a healthy environment for rehearsal, tech, performances, curbing drama onstage and off, guerilla marketing and advertising tools, and one of the most important questions - Commercial or Critical Success?, and the difference in the long run. These are just some of the challenges you must have answers to in addition to facing hundreds of others not mentioned.
