TV or Not TV: Adapting Your Theater Skills to a Different Medium

In the room: Brian Seth Hurst, a multi-disciplinary producer, writer and strategist, Chief Storyteller of StoryTech® Immersive; Jason Kyle, co-founder of the Creators Writing Room and Head of Development at CWR Productions; and Tracy Swedlow, CEO and co-founder of TMRW Corp, parent company of Interactive TV Today. Understanding the multi-platform TV industry and conceiving a property that expands beyond a single platform … the process of pitching content to the networks and other outlets, and how the CWR trains writers to do this: the process, pitfalls and politics …what stage properties translate best to TV, and the differences in the markets for single TV “films” and the episodic "series."

  • BRIAN SETH HURST

    is Founder & Chief Storyteller, StoryTech Immersive. A multi-disciplinary producer, writer and strategist, Brian Seth Hurst has spent his career at the forefront of innovation and storytelling. His work in theater, television, emerging and new media and now immersive media has enabled the building and extension of story worlds and brands. As Chief Storyteller of StoryTech® Immersive, Hurst leads the company’s work in cinematic and Live VR as well as the building of virtual words and immersive events production. Credits include My Brother’s Keeper (VR, PBS, Digital Studios), The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth 360 (VR, Showtime) Gettysburg: A National Divided (MR, QuantumERA), The Rolling Loud Hip Hop Festival (Live 360 broadcast, LivexLive, SamsungVR) Super Splat Brothers E-sports Tournament (Live 360 broadcast, E-Sports Arena, SamsungVR), and Passport to Philadelphia (AR, QuantumERA). Currently he is Producer for the LegionM volumetric series “Icons.” Events have included Shanghai XR, NABShow, and VIFF Immersed. Hurst has held leadership positions in the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Board and Second Vice Chair), the Producers Guild of America (Board and Chairman, New Media Council) and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Digital Ambassador).

  • JASON KYLE

    Co-Founder, The Creators Writing Room/Head of Development for CWR Productions. Former Peace Corps Volunteer, former Management Consultant, current Executive Producer / TV Developer / Writer / Cat-Owner. He's created content for some of the largest brands in the world and has developed shows with some of the most seasoned showrunners in the world, with experience selling to all the major buyers in Hollywood.  Jason's career and time at CBS Studios and Sony Pictures Television has made him fluent in the current TV landscape and a master storyteller.

  • TRACY SWEDLOW

    is CEO, publisher, and editor-in-chief of InteractiveTV Today (ITVT) (https://itvt.com), founded in 1998; and the co-executive producer and director of the TV of Tomorrow Show conferences (https://itvt.com/tvot) that occur in San Francisco and New York City or as livestreaming events. ITVT email newsletter and Web site are read by thousands of high-level TV multiplatform-focused executives around the world.
